May 30th marks a special occasion for cocktail enthusiasts and Southern charm aficionados alike—National Mint Julep Day. This refreshing holiday pays homage to the iconic cocktail which has become synonymous with Southern hospitality and the Kentucky Derby. Whether you're a seasoned julep drinker or trying one for the first time, National Mint Julep Day is the perfect excuse to indulge in and celebrate this refreshing cocktail

A Brief History of the Mint Julep

The mint julep's origins are somewhat murky, but its history is as rich as its flavour. The cocktail is believed to have been introduced in the United States in the 18th century. Initially, it was consumed for medicinal purposes, often enjoyed in the morning as a tonic. By the 19th century, the drink had cemented its place in Southern culture, becoming a favourite among aristocrats and socialites.

The mint julep gained national fame in 1938 when it was declared the official drink of the Kentucky Derby. Each year, nearly 120,000 mint juleps are served at Churchill Downs during Derby weekend, requiring over 1,000 pounds of fresh mint and 60,000 pounds of ice!

The Classic Mint Julep Recipe

A traditional mint julep is both simple and sophisticated, consisting of just a few key ingredients: bourbon, sugar, mint, and water. Here's a classic recipe to help you celebrate National Mint Julep Day in style:

Ingredients:

60ml Bowsaw Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey

2 dashes of Angostura Aromatic Bitters

1 teaspoon powdered sugar

2 teaspoons water

4-5 fresh mint leaves

Crushed ice

Fresh mint sprig for garnish

Instructions:

In a julep cup or a highball glass, muddle the mint leaves with the sugar and water to release the mint's essential oils.

Fill the glass with crushed ice and add the bourbon.

Stir well until the glass becomes frosty.

Garnish with a mint sprig and enjoy!
